Freelance Teacher

I never wanted to be a classroom teacher, but I live for teachable moments with curious minds. Now, I am thrilled to be a “freelance teacher” – bouncing from place to place, teaching phonics, study skills, and healing crafts to people of all ages and abilities.

File Apr 14, 10 01 11 AMMy name is Nicole Finnegan and I would be honored to tutor your child. For four school years, I had the unique pleasure of teaching at my alma mater, St. Vincent de Paul School in Stirling, NJ. This small Catholic elementary school provided me with a great opportunity for growth as a child, and again when I began my teaching career after I graduated college. While working alongside my former teachers, instructing students whom I’ve known since birth, and teaching multiple grade levels and content areas, I learned more about myself as an educator.

At Saint Vincent’s, I established myself as an innovative, creative, and challenging teacher. Unfortunately, my beloved school closed at the end of the 2015 – 2016 academic year. I seized this opportunity to finally move to the Jersey Shore-  where my heart has always been! I am the Office Manager at Downtown Dance Academy in Toms River and the C.O.L.E. for ENSPiRiTED Projects out of Brick.

Well, you can take the teacher out of the classroom, but you can’t take the passion out of the teacher!! Working in a school wasn’t for me, but the passion I have for education is unquenchable. It gives me joy to teach a child their “tough subject,” in such a way that not only teaches them, but also sticks with them because of how fun it was to learn! I push each and every one of my students, but I also give them the support and tools they need.

I learn what the child’s hobbies are, what subjects they like & excel in, then try to determine where their passions lie so I can teach what they struggle with through the lease of what they love and understand.

Having been trained in the Orton- Gillingham methodology, I would be thrilled to implement this highly effective phonics program for struggling readers. I also excel in teaching children how to get organized, how to study, and how to discover how they best learn. In addition to these skills, elementary math and K – 8 reading and writing are my fortes.

I continually look to expand my knowledge and expect my students to do the same. I will always encourage my kids to raise their own bar so as to be the best version of themselves both emotionally and academically. Working one- on- one with students continues to be my favorite part of teaching because I can truly focus on what the child needs.
